TAMPA, Fla. – The Barry softball team (13-7, 0-2 SSC) lost a pair of games to the University of Tampa Spartans at the UT Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action.
The Spartans (7-10, 3-2 SSC) got off to quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on three Buccaneer errors. Devlin Dougherty singled to score Michele Horan, and then Dougherty scored on the next play.
The Bucs responded in the top of the next inning to tie the score at 2-2 on
Shyla Rider's two RBI triple that plated
Holli Davis and
Danielle Rezendes. Barry and Tampa then went 12 scoreless innings until the Spartans scored the winning run 3-2 in the bottom of the 15
th on Kelly Glover's RBI single.
Liz Bennett pitched seven innings for the Bucs giving up five hits and two runs.
Amber Jack struck out nine but suffered the loss (7-4), pitching 7.2 innings and giving up seven hits and one run.
The Spartans' bats were just as powerful with 12 hits as Glover led with three and Becker added two. Seven other players each added one.
Dougherty pitched eight innings, striking out nine but giving up seven hits and two runs. Crooks (2-0) picked up the win for the Spartans, pitching seven innings but allowing four hits.
The second game started much like the first with Tampa scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead on Glover's two RBI single. The Bucs were held scoreless for the remainder of the game as the Spartans took the victory.
Rider and
Cristina DeTagle each recorded a hit for Barry.
Casey Pyron (1-2) pitched two innings and suffered the loss, while Jack came in for relief and pitched four innings, giving up only two hits.
Heather VanLandingham (2-4) pitched seven scoreless innings for the Spartans, giving up two hits and striking out five. Seven different players for Tampa each had one hit each.
The Bucs next play Tampa on Monday, Mar. 5 at 12:00 pm to conclude their SSC series season opener.
