MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team not only extended their win streak to 10 games after taking two from the Millersville Marauders, but senior
Maile Keeney tied the school record with 23 home runs. Barry defeated Millersville (5-6) 3-0 in the first game and 10-2 in five innings on Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs (23-8) plated the first run of the game in the second inning after
Danielle Rezendes' first career-triple scored
Brittany Anderson who reached on a double. In the fifth inning Barry added insurance runs as
Maile Keeney doubled to left field scoring
Shyla Rider.
Holli Davis then hit a RBI-double to bring in Keeney for the Bucs 3-0 lead.
Rider led the Buccaneers with three hits while Keeney added two and four others contributed one. The Marauders never did more then threaten as Lindsay Hosier and Trisha Johnson each recorded only one hit.
Liz Bennett (9-1) grabbed her ninth win of the year, pitching a complete game shutout, giving up two hits while striking out five. Emily Flieger (3-3) suffered the Marauder loss, giving up nine hits for three runs while striking out two.
The Bucs were held scoreless for the first two innings of the second game before the flood gates opened, as Barry scored six in the third. With the bases loaded,
Ashley Loose hit a two-RBI double for the first runs of the game. Keeney then delivered her school-tying 23rd home run, her fourth of the season, to score the next three before Anderson knocked in a RBI-single to give Barry its 6-0 lead.
Millersville responded by getting two runs in the top of the fourth as Shania Briel plated the first run with the bases loaded and Trisha Johnson followed with another RBI to bring the Marauders within 6-2. However, those would be the only runs Millersville ended up scoring.
Barry answered back in the fourth with four more runs to seal the game. With two runners on base,
Amanda Goelz hit a two-RBI double to centerfield. She was followed by Keeney's first-ever triple and another Davis single to put the Bucs ahead 10-2.
Keeney and Davis led the Bucs with two hits each, and Keeney drove in four runs. Hosier, Erin Hepner, and Jillian Golomboski each recorded one hit for the Marauders.
Amber Jack (13-5) pitched four innings for Barry, giving up three hits and two runs while not walking a single batter.
Casey Pyron pitched one inning of no-hit relief while striking out one. Erica Slavinski (2-3) took the loss for Millersville, going just over two innings and allowing six runs on five hits.
The Buccaneers continue their home streak with a single game on Tuesday, Mar. 20 as they host Southern Connecticut State at 5:00 pm at Buccaneer Field.
