Softball Tames Mountain Lions

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Coming off six straight wins at the Fun in the Sun Tournament, the Barry University softball team continued their dominance after obliterating the Concord Mountain Lions 14-0 and 8-0 in five inning games on Wednesday at Buccaneer Field.
 
After opening the first inning with one run, the Bucs (21-8) scored four in the second. Ali Perantoni led off the second with a single followed by a RBI single by Shyla Rider. After a single by Cristina DeTagle to load the bases, Amanda Goelz doubled to left field scoring two runs. Holli Davis then singled scoring Barry's fourth run.
 
The Bucs' bats continued to be hot with a two-out six run third inning. Goelz hit a three-RBI double to centerfield, clearing the loaded bases. Maile Keeney then doubled to score Goelz, followed by a Davis homerun to put the Buccaneers on top 11-0. Barry then added three more runs in the fourth to close out the game 14-0.
 
DeTagle and Davis led the Bucs with three hits each, as Rider and Goelz added two while four other players recorded one.
 
Liz Bennett (8-1) picked up the win for Barry, throwing three complete innings and striking out six. Amber Jack came in for relief, pitching two innings for the combined no-hitter and shutout. Concord's Melina Bowman (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up 14 hits in four innings.
 
The Bucs opened an early lead in the night cap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Rider scored on a Mountain Lion (4-8) error followed by a two-RBI single from Keeney to put the Bucs ahead 3-0.
 
Barry added to their lead in the third and fourth innings scoring two runs each. In the third, Goelz singled and came around to score on a passed ball while pinch-runner Perantoni scored on Jack's RBI single to left field. In the fourth, Keeney hit a two-RBI double to left field to give Barry a 7-0 lead.
 
The Bucs needed only one run in the fifth inning to close out the game as Rider then came through with an RBI single down the right field line to score Rezendes from second base.
 
Keeney had a game-high three hits with four runs batted in. Rider, DeTagle, and Goelz each recorded two hits as three others had one.
 
Jack (12-5) received the win for Barry, pitching five innings and allowing only one hit and striking out five. Sara Allen (0-1) took the loss for Concord, giving up eight runs on 12 hits.
 
Barry next plays on Saturday, Mar. 17 against Millersville in a double-header beginning at 10:30 am at Buccaneer Field.
