Softball Completes Sweep; Named Tournament Co-Champions

BRADENTON, Fla. – The Barry University softball team concluded the 2007 College Softball Fun in the Sun Tournament with two wins, giving the Buccaneers (19-8) a complete six game sweep during the three day event and solidifying themselves as tournament co-Champions. The Bucs crushed the West Liberty Toppers 11-1 in five innings and pulverized the American International Yellow Jackets 9-0.

After giving up the Toppers (0-4) only run of the game in the top of the first, Barry responded with a single from Ashley Loose and a double from Amanda Goelz that plated Loose to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bucs then erupted with six runs in the second inning as every player batted through the cycle. With two runners on base, Brittany Anderson knocked a two-RBI double into centerfield. Loose then singled followed by RBI doubles from Goelz and Holli Davis to give Barry a 7-1 lead.

The Buccaneers continued to exploit the Toppers as they added extra runs in subsequent innings. With two outs in the third, Anderson recorded her second double of the game to give the Bucs a base runner. Two walks later, Loose reached on an error scoring two for the Bucs 9-1 lead.  Davis started the fourth with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch. Ali Perantoni then belted a RBI double to give the Bucs an 11-1 lead.

Loose, Goelz, Davis, and Anderson led Barry with two hits each as Perantoni picked up one.

Liz Bennett (7-1) pitched a no-hitter, giving up only one run while striking out six in four innings of work. Amber Rankin (0-1) took the loss for the Toppers, handing over nine runs on seven hits and walking five batters.

The Bucs opened up the first inning against the Yellow Jackets (1-5) with two runs as Shyla Rider and Loose singled to lead off. Goelz then hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Rider home. Davis followed by rapping out a double which plated Goelz for Barry's 2-0 lead.

Barry added another two runs in the third and the fourth. Loose led off the third with a single and Amber Jack hit a two-RBI shot to left field to score the runs. With two outs in the fourth, DeTagle and Loose hit back-to-back singles before Goelz's double drove them in for the Bucs 6-0 lead.

The Bucs next batted in three runs in the fifth to end the game. Sara Hipson led off with a base hit to right field and came in to score on an error by the pitcher. She was followed by another single from DeTagle and with the bases loaded, Goelz belted a two-RBI double.

Loose went four-for-four with three runs batted in while DeTagle had three hits. Deanna Zanetti led the Yellow Jackets with one hit.

Jack (11-5) picked up her fourth win in the tournament, throwing a one-hitter while striking out six and not walking a batter. Sara Puglisi (0-1) took the Yellow Jacket's loss, giving up six runs on ten hits.

The Buccaneers return home for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 14 against Concord starting at 4:00 pm.
