Softball Takes Doubleheader From Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After starting the season with a loss, the Barry University softball team (5-1) have now won five in a row picking up a pair of wins over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at Howard Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Buccaneers won the opening game 5-2 and the nightcap 3-0.
 
The Bucs fired out early to start the first game with three consecutive hits and a pair of runs. Brittany Anderson led off with a double to center field and later scored on Ashley Loose's RBI triple to right. Shyla Rider followed suit with an RBI single to give Barry the early 2-0 lead.
 
In the third, Ashley Loose led off with a single and later scored the eventual game-winner on Amanda Goelz's sacrifice fly. The Sailfish (0-6) tried staging a comeback in the later innings scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. However, Barry added a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings to win 5-2.
 
Anderson, Loose, Rider and Casey Pyron each at two hits to lead the Bucs, while Rider added a couple RBI and Loose swiped two bases. Liz Bennett (1-1) picked up her first win of the season going 4.1 innings allowing just one run on two hits. Amber Jack struck out two in 2.2 innings of relief. Ashley Jones (0-2) suffered the loss for Palm Beach Atlantic giving up four runs on seven hits. Casey Gibson led the Sailfish at the plate with two hits and an RBI.
 
In the nightcap, both teams struggled offensively until the later innings. Ali Perantoni finally broke the scoreless streak in the fifth inning scoring on Anderson's RBI single. Rider and Goelz both scored in the sixth to help the Buccaneers win, 3-0.
 
Rider and Pyron each recorded an RBI, while Jack improved to 4-0 from the circle. She hurled seven innings of two-hit shutout softball and struck out eight. Nikki Staten recorded Palm Beach Atlantic's two hits, while Michele Scales (0-2) gave up three runs on four hits in the loss.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 16 hosting the 2007 Barry/Nova Invitational. Barry will face Nova Southeastern at 5 pm followed by Valdosta State at 7 pm.
