Softball Downs Spartans on the Road

TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore southpaw Amber Jack recorded two victories, and stuck out six in eight innings of relief to help lead the Barry University softball team (3-1) to a pair of wins against the Tampa Spartans on Sunday afternoon at the UT Softball Complex in non-conference action. Barry won the first game 2-0 in nine innings and the second 3-2 in ten innings.

In a match-up similar to the first game against Alabama-Huntsville a day earlier, neither Barry nor Tampa (0-4) managed to plate any runs during the regulation seven innings. Barry held the advantage over Tampa in hits, 4-3 including Maile Keeney's game winner.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Tampa appeared to have control of the game. However, Amber Jack recorded the final two outs leaving three Spartan runners stranded and sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the ninth with the bases loaded, Keeney finally broke the scoreless game with a two-RBI double scoring Brittany Anderson and Ashley Loose. She finished the game with a pair of hits and two RBI, while Shlya Rider and Holli Davis recorded a hit.  Kelly Glover had a pair of hits to lead Tampa.

Liz Bennett went 6.1 innings, struck out three and allowed three hits, while Jack came in to record the win. She hurled 2.2 innings without giving up a hit. Devlin Dougherty (0-2) pitched all nine innings for the Spartans, allowing two runs on four hits.

In the night cap, Tampa scored first when Brandyce Trowell hit an RBI double to score Katie Davis who reached on a one-out single. Barry responded in the fifth when Ryder drove in Davis to tie the game on a one-out RBI single. The Buccaneers took the lead in the eighth inning on an Amanda Goelz sacrifice fly to right field that scored Ryder.

In the bottom of the eighth and two outs, Barry was looking forward to heading home with a win. However, with two strikes, Spartan pinch hitter Devlin Dougherty singled to left center to drive in the tying run and kept the game alive for Tampa. Finally, in the top of the tenth, Brittany Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run that led to the Bucs 3-2 win.

Ryder, Anderson, and Goelz each recorded single RBI to lift the Bucs. Casey Pyron (0-0) hurled the first 4.2 innings, allowed five hits and struck out six. After earning the win in the first game, Amber Jack (3-0) earned the win in game two hurling 5.1 innings of two-hit relief. Michele Horan led the Spartans with a pair of singles and an RBI, while Heather Van Landingham (0-2) suffered the 10-inning loss for Tampa allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out nine.

The Bucs return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 taking on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a double header beginning at 4:00 pm in West Palm Beach, Fla.
