Softball Splits with Alabama-Huntsville to Open Season

TAMPA, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (1-1) opened the 2007 season splitting a key south region doubleheader with the 12th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Saturday afternoon at the UT Softball Complex. The Buccaneers lost the first game 1-0 in eight innings, but captured the nightcap 5-2.

Alabama-Huntsville recorded five hits to Barry's four in the first game, but neither team managed to plate a run until the tie-breaker eighth inning. With a runner placed on second base, the Chargers finally scored the game's first run. Barry nearly responded in the bottom half of the same inning with the bases loaded and no out. But Charger pitcher Sage Woodham (2-0) slammed the door to record the win. Amy Harris had a pair of hits to lead UAH, while Shyla Rider led Barry with a pair of doubles.

After only recording four hits to start the series, the Barry offense erupted with 14 hits in the second game and scored five runs early to hand UAH their first loss of the season.

No runs crossed the plate in the first inning, but Amanda Goelz had a lead-off double in the second and Casey Pyron followed with an RBI double to give Barry a 1-0 lead. Pyron later scored after a Danielle Rezendes' RBI single to extend Barry's lead, 2-0. The Buccaneers added two more runs in the third and one in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

The Chargers tried to rally in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Beth Lawson and Jenny Hess each drove in single runs, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. Amber Jack (1-0) entered game in relief to pick up the win for Barry and struck out five, including all three batters in the seventh inning.

Rider and Cristina DeTagle went three-for-six to lead the Buccaneers at the plate, while Rezendes and Pyron added two RBI.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Sunday at 12 noon facing the Tampa Spartans in a non-conference regional match-up at the UT Softball Complex.
