HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 16th-ranked Barry University softball team (11-5) finished the 2007 Charger Chillout splitting a pair of games against the North Alabama Lions (14-2) on Sunday afternoon. Barry fell to the Lions 1-0 in the first game, but rebounded with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Originally scheduled to start at 9 am on Sunday morning, the tournament was postponed because of inclement weather the night before. Finally deciding on an alternate playing field, the Buccaneers and Lions finally saw first pitch at 2:30 pm.
In the first game, North Alabama's Jessica Liddy reached on a two-out double and later scored the go ahead run on Lindsey Bates' RBI single. The early 1-0 lead was all the Lions need to get the win.
Maile Keeney recorded three of the Bucs' six hits to lead all hitters.
Amber Jack (6-3) suffered the loss for Barry allowing one run in seven innings and struck out three. Sabrina Roberts (5-0) remained undefeated hurling a complete game six-hit shutout and struck out three for North Alabama.
The Buccaneers fell behind 3-0 in the nightcap after North Alabama scored two runs in the first and a single run in the fifth on Andrea Palmer's solo home run. Although down, the Bucs regained their poised and finally tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning on
Amanda Goelz's three-run home run.
Barry followed up with a pair of runs in the seventh for the win.
Cristina DeTagle reached on a single and
Ashley Loose drove in the Bucs' winning run on an RBI double to left center. Goelz followed with RBI single to plate Loose, which led to the 5-3 score.
Goelz led Barry with two hits and four RBI, while Loose added three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Liz Bennett (4-1) gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out 10 in 6.1 innings. Jack came in with the bases loaded for the final two outs to earn her second save of the season.
Sarah Whitlow led North Alabama with two hits, while Maggi Eades added a pair of RBI. Stephanie Glienke (4-2) allowed five runs on five hits and struck out five in the loss for the Lions.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 hosting highly-touted Le Moyne at Buccaneer Field in a double-header starting at 5 pm.
