DECATUR, Ala. –
Amber Jack (So., Homestead, Fla.) recorded a career best 12 strikeouts against the sixth-ranked Georgia College & State Bobcats to help lead the 16
th-ranked Barry University softball team (10-4) to a pair of wins on day two of the 2007 Charger Chillout. Hosted at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex, the Buccaneers zapped the highly touted Bobcats 2-0 then erupted for an 18-2 thrashing of the West Alabama Tigers in five innings.
Looking to rebound from a pair of losses, the Buccaneers faced the GCSU Bobcats (11-2) who were ranked in the top 10 of the NFCA Top 25 Preseason poll to start the day. After struggling with back-to-back bases loaded situations in the first two innings, head coach Danielle Penner went to the bullpen for Jack (6-2). She mowed down the Bobcat hitters allowing just two hits in 5.2 innings striking out a career-high 12 to earn the win.
Maile Keeney managed to break up a scoreless game with a leadoff home run in the fourth. Later in the same inning and the bases loaded,
Shyla Rider was hit by a pitch to pick up the easy RBI which led to the 2-0 win. Mandy Chandler (6-2) suffered the loss for GCSU, but struck out eight. Deidra Baitey led GCSU with two hits.
The Buccaneers carried their momentum into the next game to face the West Alabama Tigers (8-8). Barry took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after a run-generating spark from
Amanda Goelz. In the second, the flood gates opened as the Bucs erupted for 15 runs and 15 hits. By the time the inning was over, Barry had gone through the lineup three times and every offensive player on the roster reached base.
Keeney led the Bucs offensively with two hits, a homer, and four RBI. Jack (6-2) got the start and struck out four in two innings. Rookie
Casey Pyron (1-1) struck out six and picked up her first win of the year allowing two unearned runs on three hits. Brittany McGee (0-1) suffered the loss for West Alabama giving up six runs through one inning.
The Buccaneers are expected to return to action on Sunday morning at 9 am facing West Georgia followed by an 11 am match-up against North Alabama.
