DECATUR, Ala. – The Barry University softball team (8-4) suffered a pair of losses to open the 2007 Charger Chillout on Friday at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex. Barry dropped both games in the seventh inning when they fell to Delta State 3-2, and 1-0 to 12th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville in the nightcap.
In the first game, neither team was able to plate a run until the fifth inning. Finally, Barry's
Shyla Rider broke the scoreless streak with a two-run RBI double to put the Bucs on top 2-0. Delta State then took advantage of three Buccaneer errors and scored an unearned run in the fifth and ended the game with two unearned runs in the seventh for the win.
Jack (5-1) entered the game in the sixth inning to suffer the loss. She went one inning and struck out two.
Liz Bennett went five innings and struck out seven as the starter. Rider and
Cristina DeTagle led the team with two hits, while Rider added two RBI. Randa Blenden (4-2) went the distance for the Lady Statesmen to earn the win, while Erica Harris and Brittany Tillery each recorded two hits.
In the nightcap,
Brittany Anderson recorded two of the Bucs' four hits. However, Alabama-Huntsville's Sage Woodham and Jack battled it out from the rubber through six innings. The Chargers finally edged Barry in the seventh inning scoring an unearned run to win the game 1-0.
Woodham (7-2) scattered four hits and struck out five to earn the win. Jack (5-2) allowed five hits and struck out two in the loss. Woodham scored the winning run for UAH, while Megan Blanchard went two-for-three to lead the Chargers at the plate.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 taking on seventh-ranked Georgia College at 11 am followed by West Georgia at 1 pm.
