Baseball Earns Series Win Over Ninth-Ranked Eagles

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers squandered a 7-1 lead to lose 8-7 in 12 innings in the opening game of a doubleheader with ninth-ranked Florida Gulf Coast, but bounced back to take the nightcap 11-5 and the series two games to one.

The Bucs (27-13-1) built a 7-1 lead in game one after three innings. Nick Corbeil hit his 10th homer and Bobby Hartney, Jerry Thornton and Gabriel Casanova added RBI singles.

But in the seventh inning, the Eagles (28-9) scored five unearned runs thanks to errors by starter Ray Rhoads and second basemen Brett Rossi. Ian Manson had a two-run double and Travis Cunningham had a two-run single.

In the ninth inning, with two outs, Casey Coleman drilled a wind-aided homer to dead centerfield off Jesse Naber (0-2) to tie the game at 7-7. Josh Upchurch provided the game-winner in the 12th inning, also off Naber, with a one-out solo homer to right field.

Naber took the loss for Barry, Pitching five innings in relief of Rhoads and allowing the two runs on five hits and two walks, with two strikeouts. Matt Laliberte (3-1) worked 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and two walks to pick up the win. Coleman came in from second base to pitch a perfect twelfth for hit third save.

In the rubber game, the Bucs fell behind 3-1 early, but homers by Naber, Andrew Frezza and Orestes Gonzalez led them back for an 11-5 win.

David Bernat (4-1) earned the win with 5.2 gutsy innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk, striking out two.

Eagle starter Chris Hassen was injured in the first inning and Troy Beall came on in relief. Beall ended up with the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in 2.2 innings.

The Bucs travel to Melbourne, Fla., for a Sunshine State Conference series against the Florida Tech Panthers on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 14-15.
