Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Buccaneers (32-19-1, 10-11 SSC) were unable to wrap up a series win over Saint Leo (32-20, 12-9 SSC) dropping a Saturday doubleheader 7-6 and 5-0.
 
Four early Saint Leo errors in the first inning translated into four quick runs for Barry in the first game of the doubleheader but the Buccaneers were unable to hold on to the lead and fell in a close 7-6 contest.
 
In the first inning, Barry jumped out to a quick start with Alex Meneses scoring on an Andrew Frezza infield single. Orestes Gonzales continued his hot hitting with a deep sacrifice fly to right field which allowed Frezza to score.
 
Over the third and fourth innings, the Lions were able to pounce back and take a 5-4 lead. In the sixth they added two more runs on a two run home run by Devon Cason off of reliever Bobby Hernandez.
 
In the top of the ninth, the Bucs began to rally back after being down 4-7 with four consecutive hits but fell short of taking the game 6-7.
 
Ray Rhoads (5-2) took the loss going 3.2 innings five runs (four earned) off eight hits. Bobby Hernandez provided four innings of solid relief allowing two runs (both earned) off of two hits while striking out three.
 
David Bernat (4-2) took the mound for the Buccaneers in game two but was unable to hold off the Lions going 4.1 innings allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with three strike outs.
 
Only four Bucs were able to muster a hit against Saint Leo starter Ryan Clark (4-2). Clark pitched six innings allowing of four hit ball with two strike outs to earn his fourth victory of the season.
 
The Buccaneers will close out the regular season and continue their push for a NCAA Regional Bid when they host defending National Champion Florida Southern next weekend. The first game of the three game set will be on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.
