SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers (32-17-1, 10-9 SSC) blasted the Saint Leo Lions (30-20, 10-9 SSC) 12-0 in a series opening victory at Southard Stadium.
Jayson Brown earned his seventh victory pitching eight masterful innings, scattering five hits and no runs.
Alex Meneses jump started the Buccaneer offense with two stolen bases after reaching on a walk in the third. With Meneses at third base,
Cesar Aranguren hit a quick chopper to the shortstop to drive in Meneses with the first run of the contest.
In the top of the fourth, with the bases loaded and no outs,
Jerry Thornton drilled a shot to right field, knocking in two runs. Following Thornton, Meneses hit a two-run triple and advanced home on a muffed throw to give the Buccaneers a 6-0 lead.
Orestes Gonzalez added two more runs for Barry with a two-run home run in the fifth. The long ball was his twelfth on the season.
Meneses added his third RBI of the evening, driving in
Bobby Hartney with a double in the sixth. The Buccaneer sixth continued with Frezza contributing another run on double to left field, driving in Meneses for a 10-0 Barry lead.
In the seventh, Barry extended their lead 12-0 and sealed the victory.
Brown (7-4) held the Lions hitless through four innings and finished the evening with eight shut-out innings, striking out four. Mike Davila pitched one inning of relief in the ninth.
Meneses finished the contest going 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Brett Rossi was 4-for-5 on the night. Frezza, Gonzalez and Thornton each drove two runs.
Ronald Lowe (8-2) pitched four innings allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits in the losing effort for Saint Leo.
The Buccaneers and Lions will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game beginning at noon.
