BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers were better than the Lynn Fighting Knights for seven of the nine innings on Sunday, but Lynn held the edge in the third and sixth innings as they avoided the Sunshine State Conference baseball sweep with a 13-7 win at the McCusker Sports Complex.
The Knights (24-11, 6-6 SSC) scored 11 of their 13 runs in the third and sixth frames.
The Bucs (24-12-1, 6-6 SSC) scored first with three runs in the top of the third inning.
Orestes Gonzalez had an RBI single and
Nick Corbeil drove in one with a double.
But in the bottom of the inning, back to back home runs from Jimmy Bacon and Felix Martinez gave Lynn a 5-3 edge.
Barry knotted the game in the fifth inning. Corbeil added another RBI double and came around to score on a groundout by
Brian Martinez.
But in the bottom of the inning, Martinez reached leading off the frame on an error by Barry's
Andrew Frezza in right field and George Brandner made it count with a sacrifice fly.
The Knights removed most of the doubt in the sixth inning as the first six batters reached base safely. Tommy Tickenoff singled through the right side and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Barry starter
Glenn Zavitz (2-4). Jason Ten Eyck followed with a single to right field, and advanced to second on a fielding error by rf, scoring Tickenoff.
Jon Adams relieved Zavitz and gave up and RBI single to Nicolas Boisvert and an infield hit to Brandon Mann. After hitting Bacon, Adams was lifted for Mike Davila who gave up a two-run double to Martinez but worked out of the inning by striking out Steve Somers and Ten Eyck.
Corbeil capped a four-for-five day with his team-leading ninth home run, a mammoth shot to left off reliever Chris Snow in the eighth. But Snow retired the Bucs in order in the ninth to end the day.
Andrew Majoros (5-0) went 6.2 innings, allowing five unearned runs on 11 hits and three walks, striking out eight to earn the win. Zavitz worked five innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, walking two and striking out four.
In addition to Corbeil, who drove in four, Gonzalez and Hartney each had three hits for Barry. Boisvert had three hits and drove in two, while Tickenoff added three hits of his own and Martinez had three RBI for the Knights.
The Bucs host their cross town rivals, St. Thomas, at Feinbloom Field on Tuesday, Apr. 4 at 6:00 pm.
