ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (33-7, 15-3 SSC) completed the series sweep over the Eckerd Tritons (13-35, 2-16 SSC) with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Turley Field. The Buccaneers opened the Saturday doubleheader with a 6-0 win, and closed out the series with a 13-5 six-inning win in the nightcap.
In the first game,
Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) drove in the Bucs' first-inning run on a sacrifice fly. The Bucs added two more run in the following inning when
Danielle Rezendes (So., New Bedford, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) hit an RBI single to give the Bucs a 3-0 advantage. The Bucs got all they needed with RBI hits from
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.), Loose, and Keeney for a three-run fourth and the 6-0 win.
Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) hurled four innings of shutout relief, allowed no hits and struck out five to earn the win for Barry. She improved to 10-3 on the season.
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up the start and hurled three shutout innings and gave up only two hits, while striking out four. Amy McGathey (5-7) suffered the loss for the Tritons giving up six runs on nine hits and walked two.
Loose collected three hits and two RBI to lead Barry at the plate, while Keeney added two hits of her own and two RBI.
Kim Fujimoto (Sr., Carmichael, Calif.) also added two hits in the game.
In the nightcap, the Buccaneers erupted from opening pitch. Jack helped her own cause as the Bucs' pitcher with an RBI single in the first inning that gave Barry a 1-0 lead. The Bucs continued to roll with a five-run second inning. Loose hit her third home run of the year to plate three runs and then Keeney followed with a two-run four bagger of her own before the Tritons managed to close out the inning.
Freshman
Brittany Anderson (Fr., Chandler, Ariz.) came up big in the third leading off the inning with a solo homer, the first of her collegiate career. The blast over the right field wall accounted for a three-run inning that gave Barry a 9-0 lead. The Tritons managed to score a run in the bottom half of the same inning. Two innings later, the Buccaneers extended the lead even more with RBI from
Amanda Moore (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), Rider, and
Megan Vincent (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) for 12-1 lead.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, defensive miscues by the Bucs allowed the Tritons to score four runs that extended the game to a sixth inning. Keeney then belted her second home run of the game and third of the series to give the Bucs a 13-5 win in the nightcap and the series sweep.
Keeney had two home runs with three RBI to lead Barry at the plate in game two. Loose added three RBI and a pair of hits to go along with Rezendes' and DeTagle's two hits apiece. Jack (11-3) earned the win in game two as well as the first going 3.1 innings allowing no hits and struck out four. Jenn Barnes (6-22) went just two innings and gave up seven runs in the loss for Eckerd.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Monday, Apr. 17 at 5 pm hosting Florida Gulf Coast in a key South Region match-up at Buccaneer Field.
