Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Panthers

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Barry baseball team split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with Florida Tech, winning game one 9-6 and dropping the second game and the series 4-3.
 
In game one, Nick Corbeil had four hits, including two homers and a double and Cesar Aranguren also added a long ball at the Bucs pounded out a 9-6 win.
 
Mike Davila (4-2) tossed four shutout innings in relief of starter Ray Rhoads, scattering nine hits and two walks, to earn the win. Brett Backman (5-3) took the loss for the Panthers, going 2.2 innings and allowing six runs on five hits and two walks. Jesse Naber came on to record the last five outs for his fifth save.
 
In game two, the Bucs grabbed a 3-2 lead the fourth inning. Corbeil knocked in Aranguren with a single and Naber brought in Andrew Frezza with a groundout.
 
But in the bottom of the fifth inning, Devin Hopkins capped off a three-for-three game with a two-run homer off Barry starter David Bernat to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead and they went on to take the game and the series.
 
Bernat (4-2) went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out two. Mike Piazza (3-2) tossed a complete game for the Panthers, holding the Bucs to just three hits as they scored three runs. He walked four and struck out four.
 
The Bucs will now face Nova Southeastern on Tuesday, Apr. 18 at University Field at 6:00 pm in a non-conference game.
