MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (30-7) won both ends of the doubleheader against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (7-34) to complete the season sweep at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday night. The Buccaneers won the first game 7-0 and the nightcap 3-0.
In the first game, Barry took an early 1-0 first-inning lead on a
Kim Fujimoto (Sr., Carmichael, Calif.) sacrifice fly that plated
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) from third.
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) extended the Bucs lead in the third with an RBI double, 2-0.
The Bucs scattered six hits over the final two innings scoring three runs in the fifth and two in the third for the 7-0 win. Barry scattered nine hits over six innings led by Loose's two and two RBI. Rider picked up a hit, an RBI, and scored three times.
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned the win giving up just one hit through four innings and struck out six to improve to 13-3.
Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) earned her third save of the season hurling three innings of shutout relief and struck out three. Michele Scales (4-13) suffered the loss for Palm Beach Atlantic giving up nine hits seven runs (six earned) and struck out four.
Neither team managed to score a run in the nightcap until Barry finally plated two runs in the third inning. Rider doubled in
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) who reached on a single. Loose singled in another run to give Barry a 2-0 lead before the inning was over. Rider added an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single that plated DeTagle for the 3-0 win.
DeTagle went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored twice to lead Barry, while Rider went 2-for-3, scored once, and picked up two RBI.
Liz Bennett (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went five innings, allowed one hit and struck out 10 in the win to improve to 8-1 on the season. Casey Hayden (1-11) suffered the loss for the Sailfish. She hurled six innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, struck out three, and walked one.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 14 at 7 pm in St. Petersburg, Fla. for the first of a three-game set against SSC opponent Eckerd College.
