MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) collected two hits, two RBI and the win from the pitching circle to help the Barry University softball team (28-7, 12-3 SSC) clinch the series sweep over the Lynn Fighting Knights (20-15, 4-11 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference play at Buccaneer Field. The Buccaneers won both ends of the Saturday doubleheader, 3-2 and 4-3, after picking up an 8-0 win on Friday.
In the first game, Stephanie Kelley drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to give Lynn a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Barry's
Katie Arnone (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the same inning with a sacrifice fly that plated
Megan Vincent (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio).
Jenna Piotrowski picked up an RBI single in the third inning to help the Fighting Knights regain the lead 2-1. However,
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) accounted for two Buccaneer runs in the third inning with an RBI triple and also scored on a wild pitch to give Barry a 3-2 lead and all they needed for the win.
Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Barry, while Candice VanderVeen led the Fighting Knights with two hits.
Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) hurled a complete game, allowed seven hits, two runs, walked two, and struck out four in the win for Barry. She improved her pitching record to 9-3. Cristin Kelly (4-5) earned the start for Lynn, gave up three runs on eight hits and walked three in the loss.
In the nightcap, Barry jumped on the board early and often scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) led off with a single and later scored on Loose's RBI single. Keeney and Garcia each drove in a run to extend the Bucs' lead to 3-0.
Garcia helped her own cause in the third with an RBI triple, but Lynn began to rally in the sixth when Heather Tucker picked up an RBI single to narrow the gap 4-1. In the seventh, the Fighting Knights collected four hits and scored twice more on RBI singles from Meghan Osborne and Christina Rolla, but Garcia managed to get out of the jam to lift Barry to the 4-3 win for the series sweep.
Garcia (12-3) pounded out two hits and collected two RBI to lead Barry at the plate, but also picked up the win from the pitching circle after allowing 10 hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out five. Loose also picked up two hits for Barry and swiped two bases.
Rolla and Osborne each had two hits to lead Lynn at the plate, while Kelly (4-6) suffered her second loss of the day allowing four runs (three earned) on eight Buccaneer hits and walked five.
Barry will have a 10-day rest before stepping back out on the diamond on Wednesday, Apr. 12 hosting Palm Beach Atlantic at Buccaneer Field at 5 pm in a region doubleheader.
