VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Barry University softball team (13-4) suffered a pair of losses to open their 10-game spring break trip on Friday fall to the Valdosta State Blazers (14-6) at the North Campus Softball Complex on Monday. The Buccaneers lost the first game 3-2 in eight innings and later fell in the nightcap 2-0.
Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) gave the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI double that plated
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.), who had walked earlier in the inning. In the fourth,
Amanda Moore (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) pinch hit for
Jackie Godwin (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) and drew a walk. Godwin reentered the game, stole two bases and later scored from third on a
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) RBI single to extend Barry's lead to 2-0.
The Blazers scored once in the bottom half of the same inning when Brianna Collis drove in Valdosta's first run with an RBI double to left field. The Blazers took advantage of a Buccaneer defensive miscue in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game at 2-2 when Caroline Cripe scored. In the bottom of the eighth, Valdosta State's Ashley Aszman drove in the winning run with an RBI single with the bases loaded.
Garcia (4-2) suffered the loss for Barry going seven innings, three hits, three runs (two earned), walked four and struck out eight. Kristen Lindsey (4-0) earned the win for Valdosta State coming in the game as a reliever and hurling the final five innings allowing three hits, one run and struck out seven.
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) extended her hit streak to 11 games with two hits, while
Ashley Loose added to hits to lead Barry at the plate. Aszman collected two hits to lead the Blazers, including the game-winning RBI.
In the nightcap, Collis hit an RBI single up the middle that allowed Trele Edwards to score from second base to give Valdosta State an early 1-0 lead. Collis later stole home on a delayed steal to give the Blazers all they needed for the 2-0 win.
Valdosta State pitcher Liz Hall (1-2) hurled a gem to pick up her first win of the season. Heading into the seventh, she had retired 19 straight batters. Loose broke up the perfect game with a double in the seventh, but Hall came away with the one-hit shutout and four strikeouts.
