Softball Splits With Florida Tech to Close Series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (25-7, 9-3 SSC) concluded a three-game Sunshine State Conference set against the Florida Tech Panthers (23-10, 10-5 SSC) with a doubleheader split on Tuesday night. Barry took the first game 1-0, but the Panthers won the nightcap 6-4.

In the first game, the Buccaneers collected a run on four hits as Holli Davis (So., Lake Havasu, Ariz.) drove in the game's only run with an RBI single to center field. Barry scattered four more hits over the next five innings and allowed four Panther hits the entire game as they held on to win 1-0.

Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) and Kim Fujimoto (Sr., Carmichael, Calif.) each collected a pair of hits to lead Barry at the plate in game one, while Davis picked up the only RBI. Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) hurled her fourth complete-game shutout of the season and allowed just four hits and walked two to improve to 8-3. Judith Husband (5-2) suffered the loss giving up an unearned run on eight hits and walked three.

It was a different tale in the nightcap as the Panthers flipped a switch between games. Courtney Harless drove in Florida Tech's first run with an RBI single in the top of the first for the early lead. After two scoreless innings, the Panthers followed with a three-run fourth and took advantage of three Buccaneer errors to extend the lead 4-0.

Dana Buchelli and Kelly Darden then picked up RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings respectively for the commanding 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Rider led off the bottom of the inning with her fourth hit of the day and later scored on a Maile Keeney sacrifice fly. Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) later scored on a Panther error to narrow the gap 6-2.

After shutting down the Panther offense in the top of the seventh, Barry continued to cut into the deficit scoring two more runs. Shyla Rider scored on another Florida Tech error and Fujimoto drove in a run with an RBI single, but that was all the Bucs could manage as they fell 6-4 in the nightcap.

Both Rider and Loose picked up two hits and scored twice to lead the Buccaneers at the plate, while Fujimoto and Keeney each drove in a run. Katie Naumoff, Harless, Laura Chisena, and Jennifer Salls collected two hits apiece, while Bucelli posted two RBI for the Panthers.

Liz Bennett (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out two through three innings to suffer her first loss of the season and fell to 7-1 on the year. Amber West (15-7) scattered six hits over seven innings, allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out seven.

The Buccaneers will return to Sunshine State Conference action with a three-game set against Lynn beginning with a single game on Friday, Mar. 31 at 5 pm at Buccaneer Field.
