Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Tars

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and Rollins Tars split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader at Feinbloom Field on Saturday, with the Bucs taking game one 7-5 and the Tars winning the nightcap 6-1. The Bucs won the series two games to one.

In the first game, the Bucs (21-11, 4-5 SSC) scored single runs in the first and second innings and led 2-1 after two. In the sixth inning, Rollins (18-12, 3-6 SSC) rallied for three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Gene Howard led off with a double and scored on a single by Ryan McKenzie. McKenzie scored on a error and Adam Spadafora, pinch running for Ryan Maddern who had reached on the error, scored on a balk.

After the Tars added another run in the seventh, the Bucs came back in the eighth to score five and regain the lead for good. Barry loaded the bases on a single by Bobby Hartney, a double from Alex Meneses and a walk to Jerry Thornton. Andrew Frezza followed with a two runs single off Rollins' starter Eduardo Chile (3-4). Jon Wano relieved Chile and gave up an RBI single to Cesar Aranguren to tie the game at 5-5. Orestes Gonzalez then laced a double to left to score Frezza. Gonzalez later scored on a wild pitch.

David Bernat (3-1) picked up the win in relief. He went two innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit and struck out three. Jesse Naber hit one batter in a scoreless ninth, striking out two, to earn his fourth save.

In the nightcap, Rollins jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to win 6-1. Mario Lombardo (4-2) went the distance to pick up the win for the Tars. He held the Bucs to just one run on five hits, walking one and striking out two.

Glen Zavitz (2-3) took the loss for Barry. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks in 2.2 innings.

Jerry Thornton, who had two of the Bucs' five hits, scored the lone run of the game on a double by Frezza in the sixth.

The Bucs will face off against NCAA Division I Harvard on Monday, Mar. 27 at 6:00 pm.
