Baseball Wrestles Down Bobcats

MIAMI, Fla. – Jesse Naber (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a home run and picked up a save to lead the Barry University baseball team (19-10) to an 11-10 win over cross-town rival St. Thomas Bobcats (18-12) on Tuesday night at Esposito Stadium.

Barry took the early lead when Brian Martinez scored on a Bobcat wild pitch in the second inning. Andrew Frezza doubled in a run in the third to extend Barry's lead, 2-0.

In the fourth, the Buccaneers pounded out five hits and erupted with four scores to run their lead to 6-0. Jerry Thornton, Orestes Gonzalez, and Martinez each drove in a run for Barry.

Two innings later, Naber belted a two-run home run, his second of the season, with two outs to ignite another four-run inning for the Buccaneers. Alex Meneses doubled in a pair to close out the inning and extended Barry's lead to 10-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, Jose Rey doubled in the Bobcats' first run to narrow the gap, but Barry added a single run in the eighth to regain the 10 run advantage. However, in the bottom of the eight, Alex Rodriguez began St. Thomas' late comeback with a two RBI double. The Bobcats scored five runs in the inning on five hits to cut into the Buccaneer lead, 11-6.

Barry went scoreless in the top of the ninth, but St. Thomas continued their comeback in the bottom half of the inning scoring four runs led by Aliercy Nunez's lead off homer. With two outs, Naber came in to relieve the game and struck out the final batter to pick up his third save of the season.

Meneses was a perfect five-of-five and drove in two runs to lead Barry at the plate, while Martinez and Naber each added three hits, two RBI, and scored once. Juan Santana drove in three runs for St. Thomas on three hits to lead the Bobcats.

Mike Davila (3-2) was credited with the win allowing just two hits through five innings and struck out five. Naber secured the Bucs' win with the final out of the game to pick up the save. Jose Garcia (3-2) suffered the loss for St. Thomas allowing one run in two innings.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday-Saturday, Mar. 24-25 hosting Rollins at 6 pm at Feinbloom Field in a Sunshine State Conference three-game series.
