Softball Suffers a Pair of Losses to Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (21-6, 7-2 SSC) dropped both ends of a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader to the Rollins College Tars (27-4, 7-2 SSC) on Saturday afternoon losing the first game 3-1 and the nightcap 2-1 at Lake Island Park.

In the first game, Rollins returned the favor from Friday night's loss and scored first for the early lead. Jen Olsen led the inning off with a single and later scored on Stacy Sanders' RBI double. Jamie Rausch then plated two runs with a two-run homer for the early 3-0 lead.

Barry tried to come back in the fourth inning when Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) led off with a double and later scored on a fielding error by Tar second baseman Ashley East. However, despite getting two base runners on in the seventh, Rollins held on to win, 3-1.

Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) suffered the loss for Barry falling to 8-3 on the year. She pitched just one inning, gave up three hits and three runs. Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) hurled the final five innings in relief allowing just two hits and struck out six, while Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) went two-for-three to lead the Bucs at the plate. Nicole Anderson (14-4) earned the win for Rollins allowing one unearned run on four hits and struck out four.

In the nightcap, neither team was able to score through the first three innings. Finally in the bottom of the fourth, Keeney broke the tie with a solo homer to left-center giving Barry a 1-0 lead. The Bucs held on until the sixth, when Rollins shortstop Kelly Cruz doubled in a pair of runs for the go ahead score, 2-1 and the win.

Jack (7-3) gave up six hits, two runs, and struck out three in the loss for Barry. Ingrid Shumacher earned the start, but was relieved in the sixth after Keeney's home run by Anderson. She went the final 1.2 innings and earned the win to improve to 15-4 on the season.

Keeney led the Bucs at the plate going four-for-six with an RBI. Rausch led the Tars on the day going four-four-six with a home run, two RBI and scored twice.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 21 in West Palm Beach, Fla. taking on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a South Region doubleheader starting at 5 pm.
