MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—
Cesar Aranguren homered twice and drove in four runs as the Barry Buccaneers defeated Rowan University and former Buccaneer head coach Juan Ranero 12-8 at Feinbloom Field Monday afternoon.
The Buccaneers (16-7) jumped on the Profs (8-1) in the first inning.
Andrew Frezza was hit by Rowan starter Ryan Kulik (1-1) and Aranguren followed with a home run on the first pitch.
In the second inning, the Bucs took advantage of three Profs' errors to score twice.
Brett Rossi had an RBI single.
The Bucs broke the game open in the third inning. Aranguren and
Orestes Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers for the second time in a week and
Alex Meneses added a two-run double.
Jerry Thornton capped the inning with a RBI double of his own.
With the Bucs leading 12-2 in the top of the eighth inning, the Prof scored six runs on just two hits off the Barry bullpen. Bruce Reibis stroked a two-run double and the Bucs made two errors, walked three and hit another to fuel the rally.
David Bernat (2-1), making his first start after a team-high 10 relief appearances, went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four.
Jesse Naber set the Profs down in order in the ninth. Kulik took the loss for the Profs. He surrendered nine runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk, with one strikeout.
In addition to the homers, Aranguren added a single to pace the team with three hits, while Thornton, Rossi and
Gabriel Casanova each had two hits.
Alex Meneses walked twice to vault past Rey Breto into first place on the school's all-time walk list with 127.
The Bucs host the Bloomfield College Deacons on Wednesday, Mar. 15 at 6:00 pm.
