CARROLLTON, Ga. --
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) tossed an 11-inning complete game to help lead the Barry University softball team (20-4) to a doubleheader sweep over the West Georgia Braves (13-13) at Oil Park on Saturday. The Buccaneers won the first game 3-2 in 11 innings and took the nightcap 6-2.
The game remained scoreless through the first eight innings of play. Finally, in the top of the ninth, Barry took advantage of a Brave defensive miscue and scored and
Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) drove in another run with an RBI double to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead. The Braves answered in the bottom half of the inning and tied the game 2-2 to extend the game even further.
In the 11th inning, Ryder broke the tie again with her second RBI double to give Barry a 3-2 lead and Garcia shutout West Georgia from the pitching circle for the win. Garcia (7-2) struck out 10 in the win and allowed just two hits. Rider went three-for-five with two RBI to lead the Bucs at the plate. Kacie Crider (7-5) gave up five hits, three unearned runs and struck out seven in the Brave loss.
In the second game, the Buccaneers scored one run each in the first and second innings and two in the third for an early 4-0 lead. The Braves narrowed the gap scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, but Barry tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth for the 6-2 win. Rider finished the game going four-for-four with three doubles, and scored three times to lead the Bucs.
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) and
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) each added two hits apiece as the Buccaneers scattered 12 hits over the seven innings.
Freshman
Amber Jack (7-2) from Homestead, Fla. picked up another win for the Bucs. She went all seven innings, allowed seven hits, two runs, walked three and struck out seven. Kate Thompson (3-4) suffered the loss for West Georgia going 4.1 innings, allowed 10 hits, six runs (four earned) and struck out one.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Mar. 17 taking on Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. for another Sunshine State Conference series.
