Baseball Splits Double Dip With The Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and Nova Southeastern Sharks split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader at Feinbloom Field on Saturday, with the Sharks (14-7, 1-2 SSC) taking game on 10-6 and the Bucs (15-7, 2-1 SSC) bouncing back for a 4-2 win in the night cap.

In the first game, Cesar Aranguren and Orestes Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers in the second inning to build a 4-1 lead for the Bucs.

But in the fourth inning, the Sharks loaded the bases on three walks off Barry starter Mike Tomoleoni (1-2) and Shawn Langlois launched the first pitch he saw for a grand slam and a 5-4 lead for the Nova.

Langlois added a solo homer in the sixth inning and Sharks went on to win 10-6.

Jon Spier (2-1), who came on in the second inning in relief of starter Antony Bello, earned the win for the Sharks with 7.1 innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Tomoleoni took the loss for the Bucs. He allowed five runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks, striking out four in 3.1 innings.

In the second game, the Sharks got on the board in the first inning when Chris Reynolds scored on a Buccaneer error, but Alex Meneses got the Bucs even with a lead off homer in the first.

Nova reclaimed the lead in the third inning with Reynolds crossing the plate again in front of an RBI single from Greg Burrows.

In the fifth, Jerry Thornton hit a two-out solo homer to knot the game at 2-2. Andrew Frezza followed with a single and scored on a long single by Aranguren.

Nick Corbeil supplied an insurance run in the sixth inning with a tower homer to left.

Glenn Zavitz (2-1) earned the win for the Bucs, going five innings and allowing 2 runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Lou Leo (3-2) took the loss for Nova. He went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jesse Naber retired the last six batters in a row to record his second save.

Aranguren had four hits in the doubleheader, driving in two. He now has 237 hits for his career, passing Irain Gonzalez (1998-01) for the school career record. Jerry Thornton had three RBI.

The Bucs host the Rowan College Profs on Monday, Mar. 13 at Feinbloom Field at 4:00 pm.
