Softball Opens 2006 Season with a Pair of Wins

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (2-0) opened up their 2006 season under new head coach Danielle Penner with a pair of wins over the Florida Tech Panthers (0-2) in a non-conference match-up earlier today at Buccaneer Field. The Buccaneers won both games by 4-0 scores.
 
In the first game, the top of the order did the job in the Bucs' season-opening win. Shyla Rider, Cristina DeTagle, and Kim Fujimoto each collected single hits and scored at least once. Maile Keeney also added a hit and drove in three of the Bucs' four runs. Liz Bennett (1-0) earned the first win of the season allowing just four hits and striking out two. Florida Tech's Amber West (0-1) suffered the loss going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned), while striking out seven.
 
In game two, Ashley Loose led the charge in the second inning with a two-RBI triple to help give the Bucs an early 3-0 lead. She finished with two hits and two RBI, while Ryder and DeTagle also added two hits apiece. Keeney and Rider also added single RBI's. Ramie Garcia (1-0) earned the win after hurling the final four innings allowing no runs, three hits and struck out two. Halley Polio (0-1) allowed three runs and five Buccaneer hits in just 2.2 innings in the loss for the Panthers.
 
Keeney led the Bucs with four RBI on they day, while DeTagle and Rider each added three hits apiece.
 
Barry will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 5 pm taking on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in Ft. Myers, Fla.
