Baseball Drops Two In Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga.--The Barry Buccaneers dropped a pair of games in the AASU Pirate Baseball Triangle on Sunday at Pirate Field, falling 8-7 to Tusculum (1-0-1) and 6-3 to the host Armstrong Atlantic Pirates.

Tusculum 8, Barry 7

In the opening game, the Bucs (0-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning off Pioneer starter Brent Gabel (1-0). Bobby Hartney smashed a home run and Cesar Aranguren added an RBI double.

Adam Beacham trimmed the Bucs' lead in half with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth and five Buccaneer errors over the last three innings led to seven unearned runs and the Pioneers carried an 8-2 lead into the ninth inning.

In the ninth, the Bucs mounted a furious comeback. Nick Corbiel hit a solo homer with one out and, after Alex Meneses walked one out laster to load the bases, Aranguren blasted a grand slam off Pioneer reliever Boo Morrow to make it 8-7. Aaron Hudgins came on to strikeout Orestes Gonzalez to earn his first save.

Gabel, who had tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout against the Bucs at Feinbloom Field last year, picked up the win again. He went six innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out six. Jayson Brown (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Bucs. He hurled six innings, allowing six hits and three walks, while striking out five. Five of the six runs he allowed were unearned.

Armstrong Atlantic 6, Barry 3

In game two, the Pirates (1-0-1) scored one in the first, than after the Bucs had tied it in the third, posted a four-run bottom of the third. Truman Marek led off the inning with a double and Daniel Heflin provided the big blow with a two-run double. Helfin added a solo homer in the seventh.

Aranguren and Corbeil both knocked in runs in the eighth inning, but Pirate closer Matt Nalutka came in to get the final three outs to record his first save.

Jeremy Horst (1-0) picked up the win in the split game for Armstrong. He pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on just one hit and four walks, striking out three. Nalutka retired all three men he faced, striking out one.

Glenn Zavitz (0-1) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Aranguren led the Bucs in the doubleheader with five hits, including two doubles and a homer, driving in six.

The Bucs close out the road trip tomorrow with a single game against the Pioneers scheduled for 10:00 am.
