MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) and
Liz Bennett (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) each struck out nine batters in both ends of a Sunshine State Conference double-header to lead the Barry University softball team (7-0, 3-0 SSC) to a pair of wins over the Tampa Spartans (0-3, 0-3 SSC) on Sunday to complete the series sweep. The Buccaneers won the first game 3-0 and sealed the nightcap 2-1.
In the third inning of game one,
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) drove in the Bucs' first run with an RBI single to plate
Cristina DeTagle (So., North Miami, Fla.) for the early 1-0 lead. Loose then scored on a fielding error by the Tampa left fielder and
Maile Keeney (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) followed with an RBI double to score
Brittany Anderson (Fr., Chandler, Ariz.).
The three-run third inning was all the Buccaneers needed as Jack (2-0) struck out a career-high nine batters and walked one to earn her second collegiate win. She went seven innings and allowed four hits for her second shutout. Devlin Dougherty (0-1) gave up three unearned runs, allowed five hits, and struck out six in the loss for Tampa. Brandi Blout went two-for-three to lead the Spartans at the plate.
In the nightcap, Tampa jumped on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the third. Nicole Fenno led the inning off with a single through the right side and later scored on a Buccaneer error that accounted for the run.
Barry responded in the bottom half of the same inning when Keeney picked up her second RBI on the day. With two outs, she blasted a double to left center to allow Anderson, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, to score from first base.
With the score notched 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth,
Ali Perantoni (So., Miami, Fla.) led off with a walk and later scored on
Shyla Rider's (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) RBI single to left field to give Barry the 2-1 lead.
Bennett (2-0) allowed the Spartans just one more base runner in the final three innings for the win. She hurled seven innings, allowed four hits, one unearned run, one walk, and struck out nine as Barry improved to 7-0 under first-year head coach Danielle Penner. Niki Trowell (0-2) suffered the loss for Tampa. In three innings, she allowed two hits, two runs, a walk, and struck out one.
Keeney picked up two hits and an RBI to lead the Buccaneers in the nightcap, while Tampa's Michelle Horan was a perfect two-for-two with a run scored to lead the Spartans.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 24th at the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout to face tough South Region opponents. Barry is scheduled to play North Alabama at 10 am, West Georgia at 12 pm, and Delta State at 4 pm.
