MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) doubled and scored in the seventh inning to lift the Barry University softball team (5-0, 1-0 SSC) to a 1-0 win over the visiting Tampa Spartans (0-1, 0-1 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference softball action Saturday night at Buccaneer Field.
Loose picked up the Bucs' only hit of the game with a leadoff double in the seventh inning. With one out, the next two batters walked to load the bases. After picking up the second out of the inning, Tampa pitcher Niki Trowell faced
Jackie Godwin (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) for the final out. With the count full, Trowell missed low to walk in the go-ahead run and Godwin picked up the game-winning RBI.
Trowell (0-1) started the game for Tampa and retired the Buccaneer lineup in order through the first three innings. She allowed only two walks heading into the seventh, but gave up the leadoff double to Loose and walked three in the seventh and struck out eight in the loss.
Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) managed to get out of potential jams in five different innings, but retired the side in order if the fourth and seventh innings. She walked one, and struck out seven for the win, improving to 3-0 this season.
Both teams will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19th for a double-header match-up at 1 pm at Buccaneer Field.
