FT. MYERS, Fla.--The Barry Buccaneers fell to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 5-1 at Swanson Stadium Wednesday night in South Region baseball action.
The Buccaneers' miscues continued in the third inning as the Eagles (6-2) got on the scoreboard. Travis Cunningham drew a lead off walk and Jason Louwsma followed with a chopped single over third base. A throwing error by left fielder
Bobby Hartney sent Cunningham home and Louwsma trotted in on a single by Mike Cleghorn.
The Bucs (2-4) trimmed the lead in half in the sixth inning.
Andrew Frezza tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Perry and Pat Garrido had back-to-back singles and Graig Smith drove in pinch runner Casey Coleman with a double to left. Garrido came home on a ground out by Joshua Upchurch.
Smith put the capper on in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer after two outs.
J.J. Crumbley (1-0) tossed four scoreless innings to pick up the win. He allowed five hits and a walk, striking out two.
Jayson Brown (0-2) took the loss for the Bucs. In 6.0 innings, he allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks, striking out five. Justin Stiver tossed three scoreless innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts for his first save.
Alex Meneses led the Bucs with two hits, including a double. Cleghorn and Garrido each had two hits for FGCU.
The Bucs return to Ft. Myers on Friday to face the Bryant Bulldogs in a neutral site game, then with go up to Orlando for another tilt with the Bulldogs.
