FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The Barry University baseball team (0-1) fell 12-3 in their 2006 season opener against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (1-0) earlier tonight at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles took an early lead scoring two runs in the first, one in the second and four in the third. With FGCU leading 7-0, the Bucs scored a single run in the top of the fourth to cut into the lead, but Florida Gulf Coast added two more in the bottom of the inning for a 9-1 lead.
Barry rallied late with a two-run eighth ignited by
Brian Martinez's (So., Orlando, Fla.) RBI single. However, the Eagles sealed their victory with a three-run bottom half of the same inning.
Florida Gulf Coast pounded out 14 hits, while the Buccaneers managed eight.

Michael Davila (Jr., Miami, Fla.) suffered the loss going 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) and struck out one. Chris Hassen (1-0) hurled six innings, allowed four hits, one run and struck out eight to earn the win for the Eagles.
Jerry Thornton (Sr., Tampa Bay, Fla.) and Martinez each collected two hits to lead the Bucs, while Martinez added two RBI. Jason Louswma and Ian Manson added three hits each to lead the Eagles. Louswma was perfect 3 of 3 with three RBI and Shawn Griffin added three RBI.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 taking on Tusculum at 10 am in Savannah, Ga., followed by a game against Armstrong Atlantic State at 2 pm.
