MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—
Alex Gonzalez (9-3) tossed a five-hit shutout and
Ricky Sanchez belted a three run homer as the Barry Buccaneers defeated the Saint Leo Lions 11-0 in Sunshine State Conference baseball action on Sunday at Feinbloom Field.
The Bucs exploded for six runs in the first inning off Lion starter Danny Hawkins (3-6).
Brian Lima delivered the big blow, a bases-loaded double which scored three runs, as the Bucs sent 10 men to the plate in the frame.
With the Bucs up 8-0 in the sixth inning, Sanchez launched his team-leading 15th homer of the season off reliever Cody Clay, scoring
Cesar Aranguren and
Fausto Faraldo who had doubled and walked to lead off the inning.
Gonzalez went the distance for the Buccaneers, closing his career the way he began it with a complete-game win over the Lions. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. His first career start was an 9-1 win over Saint Leo on opening day in 2002.
Hawkins was tagged with the loss, allwiong six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. He did not record a strikeout.
Lima led the Bucs at the plate, with a single, double and four RBI. Aranguren and Faraldo also had two hits each, with Faraldo scoring three runs.
Anton Standifer led the Lion batters with a single and a double in three trips.
The series concludes on Monday with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon.
