MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and Saint Leo Lions split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader at Feinbloom Field, with the Bucs taking game one 5-3 and Lions coming back to take the nightcap 2-1.
In game one, Barry got one run in the first, on an RBI single from
Fausto Faraldo, and added three more in the third inning.
Brian Lima had an RBI single and two runs came around on a ground ball by
Andrew Frezza when Lion shortstop Danny Prevatt threw the ball away.
The Lions missed a golden opportunity in the fourth inning when Prevatt and Matt Prowant were thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on base hits.
Saint Leo finally got on the board with two runs in the fifth inning. Matt Graziano drove in Sean Van Guilder who had singled with two outs and Graziano later stole third and came in on a throwing error by Frezza.
Alex Meneses got one run back for Barry with his second home run of the season in the seventh inning.
Jon Adams (2-2) got the win in relief of
Glenn Zavitz, who failed to go five innings, with 2.1 shutout innings. Adams walked one, but did not allow a hit nor strike out a batter. Zavitz went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Ronald Lowe (4-5) took the loss for the Lions, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks, striking out five.
In game two, Jesse Wilson (5-6) tossed a complete game to spoil a brilliant performance by Mike Tomoleoni (6-1). Wilson scatted seven hits and three walks, allowing just one run and striking out four. Tomoleoni was perfect through four innings and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, but walked three and allowed two unearned runs, while striking out four.
Barry took an early lead in the second inning. Lima hit a one-out double and scored on a double by
Nick Corbeil.
The Lions tied the score 1-1 in the fifth inning without a hit. Prevatt walked and later came around on a sacrifice fly by Anton Standifer.
The Lions got what proved to be the game winner in the sixth. Greg Whittemore reached leading off the inning on a dropped fly ball by Thornton. Van Guilder walked and Graziano got the only hit of the game for the Lions, but Van Guilder was caught off second base by a good throw from Meneses. The Bucs walked Rhett Teller intentionally and brought in
Ray Rhoads to pitch to Prevatt with the bases loaded. Prevatt walked on four pitches and Whittemore came around with the winning run.
The Bucs runners in scoring position and no outs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but failed to score.
