Baseball Splits With Knights

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and the Lynn Knights split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader at Feinbloom Field on Saturday with the Buccaneers taking game one 9-2 and the Knights bouncing back for a 2-1 win in the night cap.

In the first game, the Bucs (23-16, 5-9 SSC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Brian Lima doubled to lead off the inning and Bobby Hartney reached on a error by Knights' third baseman Jimmy Bacon. Both runners came around on infield singles.

The Knights (26-14, 9-5 SSC) crept to within one run in the third inning as Rick Davis scored on a wild pitch by Barry starter Alex Gonzalez (6-2).

With the score 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs scored four runs with two outs to break the game open. Jerry Thornton led off with an infield single and was at third with two outs. Cesar Aranguren plated the run with a bullet up the middle and Fausto Faraldo and Ricky Sanchez followed with a single and walk respectively to load the bases. Lima walked to force in Aranguren and Andrew Frezza delivered a big two-run single to make it 7-2. The Bucs scored twice in the seventh inning for the final margin.

Gonzalez earned the win with seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out six. Lynn's Joe Cox (7-2) started and took the loss for the Knights. He surrendered seven run (six earned) on eight hits and a walk, while striking out two.

In the second game, the Knights got two runs in the second inning and Travis Rios (2-3) made the runs stand up, holding the Bucs to just one run on two hits in a complete game. He walked three and struck out 12.

Both runs scored in the second inning when Michael Pederson slapped a single into left field with two men on and the ball skipped by Buccaneer left fielder Hartney as both runners scored.

The Bucs trimmed the lead to one in the fourth when Nick Corbeil, making his first start since Mar. 19, drove in Faraldo with a sacrifice fly.

Jayson Brown (3-4) took the loss for the Buccaneers, despite allowing just one earned run in a complete game. He gave up five hits and walked three, while striking out three.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 pm with a single game.
