VALDOSTA Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their final game in the Nijem Classic 8-7 to the Dowling Lions at Valdosta State's Billy Grant Field on Sunday.
The Lions (1-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Bucs (15-6) came back to tie it with a six-run sixth inning.
Jerry Thornton,
Alex Meneses and
David San Juan all contributed RBI in the inning and the Bucs were aided by a pair of Lion errors.
But Dowling scored twice in the eighth inning off reliever
Jon Adams (1-2). Willy Ortiz doubled to lead off the inning and Bryan Bacarella reached on an error by Adams to score Ortiz. Anthony Annitra singled to drive in Bacarella and give the Lions an 8-6 lead.
Thornton knocked in San Juan in the eighth to trim the lead to one run, but that was as close as it would get as Ortiz came on to strikeout Meneses,
Nick Corbeil and
Alex Brizuela with two men on in the ninth.
Thornton had two hits and drove in two runs for Barry and
Cesar Aranguren extended his hitting streak to 28 games, dating back to last season, with a single in the sixth. Ortiz went four-for-five, including his first homer of the season, and drove in three runs. Eddie Cordova had two hits and three RBI as well.
Dan Kalbfresh (1-0) worked two innings, allowing three unearned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. Ortiz gave up two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings with three strike outs to earn his first save. Adams took the loss for the Buccaneers. He did not record an out and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits.
The Bucs return to Feinbloom Field on Wednesday, Mar. 9 to face the Crusaders of Tennessee Temple at 3:00 pm.
