LAKELAND, Fla. --
Jayson Brown pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the 19th-ranked Buccaneers as they edged top-ranked Florida Southern 2-1 Friday night at Lakeland in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams.
The Buccaneers, ending a string of nine straight losses to the Moccasins, improved to 16-6, while Florida Southern suffered just its second loss in 20 games.
Brown gave up an unearned run in the first inning and allowed the Moccasins just a pair of singles, one in the second and one in the third, to improve his record to 3-1, struck out seven and walked four. He allowed only two base runners after the third, both on walks, and struck out three of the last four batters he faced.
The Buccaneers scored an unearned run in the seventh to tie the game at 1-1, then
Ricky Sanchez delivered a two-out, RBI-single to score
Cesar Aranguren in the eighth with what proved to be the winning run.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a 1 pm doubleheader Saturday.
