VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers got grand slams out of
Cesar Aranguren and
Jesse Naber to defeat the host Valdosta State Blazers in the Nijem Classic at VSU's Billy Grant Field on Saturday.
The Blazers (8-9) jumped out in front in the second inning on a two run single from Josh Owsley, which score Jud Seymour and Brisn Hicks who had walked off Buc starter Mike Tomoleoni.
The Bucs (15-5) surged back in front in the third inning on RbI singles from
Brian Lima,
Alex Meneses and
David San Juan and an error by VSU third baseman T.A. Danner.
Valdosta reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning with four runs off reliever Mike Davila. Danner led off with a solo homer and John McDonald and Seymour added run-scoring singles.
But in the fifth, Aranguren's slam off reliever Brett Hart put the Buc ahead 9-6 and they did not trail again. Naber hit his slam in the eighth inning, tying the NCAA Division II record for grand slams in a game by one team.
Luis Gazitua (2-0) earned the win with 2.2 innings in relief. He allowed one run on one walk and three hits. Naber pitched the final three innings without allowing a run. He scattered three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Hart (0-2) took the loss for the Blazers, allowing four runs on one hit and three walks, with two strikeouts.
The Bucs close out the tournament at 11:00 am on Sunday against the Dowling Lions.
