VALDOSTA, Ga.—
Ricky Sanchez homered twice and drove in five runs during an eight-run second inning that propelled the Barry Buccaneers to a 12-5 win over the Dowling College Lions in the Nijem Classic at Valdosta State's Billy Grant Field on Friday night.
The Bucs (14-5) struck first in the opening frame as
Jerry Thornton walked and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Cesar Aranguren.
Sanchez led off the second with a solo home run and came up again in the inning with the bases loaded and popped the first grand slam of the season for the Bucs. He now has 10 home runs for the season, the fastest to 10 homers since Luis Boullon hit 10 in 21 games to start the 2001 season.
The Lions (0-1) plated a run in the fifth when Bryan Bacarella tripled and scored on a ground ball and then plated four unearned run off reliever
Jon Adams in the seventh inning. Willy Ortiz had a two-run single in the inning.
Nick Corbiel capped off the scoring for the Bucs with a three-run blast, his fourth of the year, the ninth inning.
In addition to Sanchez, Corbeil had three hits and three RBI, while
Alex Meneses also collected three hits and scored twice.
Alex Gonzalez (3-1) earned the win for Barry with six innings of four-hit work. He allowed one run, walked two and struck out a season-high 12 batters. Timmy Nese took the loss for the Lions. He worked seven innings, allowed eight hits and four walks, leading to nine runs, and struck out one.
The Bucs will face the host Blazers on Saturday at 4:30 pm, then face the Lions again on Sunday before returning home.
