Baseball Spilts Saturday Doubleheader With Spartans

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and the Tampa Spartans split a Sunshine State Conference baseball double header at Feinbloom Field on Saturday, with Tampa taking game one 10-7 and the Bucs bouncing back to take the nightcap 3-2.

In game one, the Spartans (27-5, 8-1 SSC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the top of the fifth inning. But the Bucs (20-12, 3-6 SSC) came back to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning on a RBI single from Fausto Faraldo.

But in the ninth inning, the Spartans rallied off Bucs' closer Ray Rhoads (0-3), loading the bases for pinch hitter Tyler Powers who stroked a two-run double. Tampa tacked on another run and went on to the 10-7 win.

Tyler Bishop (3-0) earned the win for the Spartans with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Rhoads tossed two innings, but allowed three runs all earned on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

In the nightcap, Alex Gonzalez (5-1) pitched his second straight complete-game, holding the Spartans to two runs on three hits and six walks, while striking out nine.

The Spartans grabbed the early lead when T.J. Alonzo smashed a two-run double, plating Lee Cruz and Roberto Valiente in the first inning.

But the Bucs came right back in the bottom of the frame to score a pair of their own. Alex Meneses and Brian Lima each singled to lead off the frame and moved up on a wild pitch by Tampa starter Johnny Williams (3-1). Ricky Sanchez drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Jerry Thornton accounted for the other with a base hit up the middle.

The game stay tied until the fifth inning. Meneses drew a leadoff walk and Lima doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. After a base-running snafu left Lima at second and Cesar Aranguren at first, Fausto Faraldo rifled a shot up the middle to score Lima with the eventual winning run.

The Spartans loaded the bases in the sixth inning with two outs, but pinch hitter Kurt Baxley popped up to end the inning and the Spartans went in order in the seventh.

Williams allowed all three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three in 4.2 innings of work. Nick Peterson retired all four batters he faced, two on strikeouts.

The Bucs travel to Melbourne, Fla., on Tuesday, Mar. 29 to face the Florida Tech Panthers in a non-conference game at 3:00 pm.
