TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (23-11, 9-3 SSC) ended a three-game Sunshine State Conference series with two wins over the Tampa Spartans (12-16, 4-11 SSC) earlier today at the University of Tampa Softball Complex. After dropping the series opener last night, the Bucs came back and won the first game 6-3 and later the nightcap, 4-0.
The Spartans jumped out early in the first game plating three runners on four hits. Kelly Glover led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Brandyce Trowell RBI triple. Trowell set the Spartans up by two scoring on a wild pitch, then Devlin Dougherty gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead with an RBI single before the end of the inning.
The Bucs were unable to score in the second, but scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to tie the game at three apiece.
Heather Hodges (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) led off the third with a single and later scored on an error by the Spartan third baseman.
Erin Sutton (Sr., Parrish, Fla.) then narrowed the game to one scoring on
Cristina DeTagle's (Fr., North Miami, Fla.) RBI single before heading into the fourth. The Bucs tied the game just an inning later when
Samantha Zadel (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) led off the fourth with a double Sutton drove her in on a groundout RBI to short.
Neither team managed to score until the seventh when Barry plated three runs. With the bases loaded,
Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) belted a two-run double to give Barry the lead.
Kim Fujimoto later came around to score and extended Barry's lead for the win, 6-3.
In the nightcap, the Bucs turned the tables on the Spartans scoring early and often. After leading off the first inning with a walk,
Ashley Loose (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) came around to score to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead in between innings. In the second, Zadel belted her second double of the day to lead things off for Barry followed by an inside-the-park home run from Sutton that plated two runs. Finally, the Bucs scored once more on a wild pitch and never looked back for the 4-0 win to close out the series.
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) hurled both ends of the double-header and picked up the win in both games. In 14 innings, she allowed nine hits, three runs, four walks and struck out nine, while improving to 11-3 on the year. Dougherty (5-9) suffered the loss in both games for the Spartans going nine innings allowing 10 Buccaneer hits, 10 runs (six earned), six walks and struck out three.
Four Buccaneers (Garcia, Keeney, Fujimoto, Zadel) collected two hits apiece for the Buccaneers, while Zadel pounded out two doubles. Both Keeney and Sutton picked up three RBI in the double-header to lead Barry. For the Spartans, Dougherty led the team wit three hits and an RBI, while Kristin Law and Trowell each collected two hits apiece.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Monday, Mar. 26 returning to the friendly confines of Buccaneer Field hosting Valdosta State at 4 pm.
