Softball Falls To Spartans In Series Opener

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (21-11, 7-3 SSC) fell to the Tampa Spartans (12-14, 4-9 SSC) earlier tonight in Sunshine State Conference action at the University of Tampa Softball Complex.

Both team breezed through the first three innings of play, but the pace came to a screeching halt in the fourth when Barry took an early 2-0 lead. Ashley Loose (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) and Cristina DeTagle (Fr., North Miami, Fla.) both came around to score for the Buccaneers on a wild pitch and a RBI single from Samantha Zadel (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Later in the sixth inning, the Spartans rallied for a two-run inning to tied the game, 2-2. Both Kelly Glover and Brandyce Trowell led the inning off with back-to-back singles and later scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Nicole Fenno. With the score tied at the end of the regulation seven, the game went into extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans' Katie Bender and Kristin Law pounded out consecutive singles to give Tampa a chance late. With one out and runners at first and second, Bender took advantage of a Buccaneer throwing error on a force out attempt at third to give the Spartans the win, 3-2.

Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) suffered the loss for Barry giving up three runs (two earned) on nine Spartan hits, while striking out three to fall to 12-8 on the year. Devlin Dougherty (5-7) picked up the win for the Spartans going eight innings, struck out nine and allowed two unearned runs.

Zadel went two-for-three with a double and an RBI to lead the Bucs, while Glover, Bender and Fenno each pounded out two hits to lead the Spartans.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 25 at 2 pm for the final two games of the three-game series.
