MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (21-10, 7-2 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference double-header with the Rollins Tars (22-9, 5-7 SSC) earlier today at Buccaneer Field. The Buccaneers won the first game 6-2, but the Tars came back to win 7-0 in the nightcap to prevent a three-game sweep.
The Tars capitalized on two Buccaneer errors early in the first inning of game one and scored once to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Buccaneers pounded out five hits and plated four runners to gain control 4-1 heading into the second inning. Barry's
Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) belted her third homer of the year in the third to extend Barry's lead by four.
Holli Davis (Fr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.) hit her team-leading eighth double of the season in the fifth to give Barry a 6-1 advantage. Rollins' Kelly Cruz drove in another Tar run with an RBI single late in the seventh, but Barry held on for the win, 6-2.
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave up seven hits, allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out four to pick of the win for Barry, while improving to 9-3 on the season. Jamie Elam (16-6) suffered the loss going just two innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and walked one. Ingrid Schumacher hurled the final four innings and gave up two runs on three hits and struck three.
The tide shifted in the nightcap as the Tars prevented the three-game sweep with a 7-0 win. Rollins scored twice in the first and third innings, while adding a run in the fourth and two in the sixth. The Tars' Stacy Sanders went four-for-four with four RBI to lead the Tars while Cruz was two-for-three and scored twice.
Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) suffered the loss for Barry giving up four runs in three innings on six hits to fall to 12-7 on the year. Garcia went 2.1 innings gave up four hits and three runs, while
Ali Perantoni (Fr., Miami, Fla.) pitched the final 1.2 innings to close out the game for the Bucs. Schumacher (6-3) gave up seven hits, but did not allow a run to cross the plate and struck out two.
Kim Fujimoto (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.), Keeney and
Samantha Zadel (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) each collected three hits in the double-header to lead Barry, while Keeney added a team-high three RBI. Both Cruz and Sanders collected five hits apiece to lead the Tars, while Sanders added a series-high four RBI.
Barry will be back in action on Thursday, Mar. 24 taking on the Tampa Spartans in Tampa, Fla. at 5:00 pm for another three-game SSC series.
