MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (20-9, 6-1 SSC) halted the 16-game streak of the Rollins Tars (21-8, 4-6 SSC) winning 2-0 in the first game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series earlier tonight at Buccaneer Field.
In an old fashioned pitching dual, the Buccaneers were able to plate two runs in the fourth and pounded out eight hits over seven innings to pick up the win, 2-0. With the bases loaded, Barry's
Heather Hodges (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) was the first to score on
Erin Sutton's (Sr., Parrish, Fla.) sacrifice fly to right field.
Delilah Stroup (Sr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) drove in the Bucs' next run with an RBI single, but was caught between first and second in a run down for the final out of the inning. However, that was all the Bucs' needed for the win.
Neither pitcher allowed a free pass, but Barry's Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) picked up the win scattering just three hits and struck out seven to improve to 12-6 on the season. Rollins' Jamie Elam (16-5) allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out three in the loss.
Kim Fujimoto (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.) and
Holli Davis (Fr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.) collected two hits apiece to lead the Bucs at the play while Sutton and Stroup added single RBI's.
Both teams will be back in action for the final two games of the three-game SSC series on Saturday, Mar. 19 at 2 pm.
