Baseball Drops Two To Top-Ranked Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Barry University baseball team (16-8, 1-2 SSC) suffered back-to-back Sunshine State Conference losses earlier today to the host and top-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (20-2, 2-1 SSC) at Henley Field. The Buccaneers lost the first game 11-7 and the nightcap 4-3, in 15 innings.

In the first game, Brian Lima led Barry going three-for-three at the plate, while Alex Meneses and Nick Corbiel each added a pair of RBI. The Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Mocs tied the game 1-1 at two complete. In the fourth, Florida Southern scored twice to take the lead 3-1, but Barry responded in the top of the fifth plating six runs for the 7-3 lead. Their lead lasted only two innings as the Moccasins scored two in the fifth, four in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to take the game 11-7.

Jesse Naber (0-2) suffered the loss for Barry working just 1.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits. John Milton (2-0) picked up the win for Florida Southern in two innings of work allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out three.

A game that was only scheduled for seven innings went long for both teams ending after 15 innings. Barry scored early to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but a three-run home run by catcher Jeff Howell gave Florida Southern a 3-2 lead after four. Ricky Sanchez hit an RBI double in the sixth inning that tied the game 3-3 and that is the way the score stood for the next eight innings. Finally, in the bottom of the 15th inning with the bases loaded, Barry's Ray Rhoads walked in the go ahead run to give Florida Southern the 4-3 win.

Rhoads (0-1) went eight innings, walked seven and struck out five while giving up his first earned run in 21 innings this season. Ryan Cahalan (3-0) received the win in just 0.2 innings and struck out one.

The Buccaneers will return to Feinbloom Field on Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 6 pm hosting Molloy in non-conference action.
