MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers overcame a shaky start to dominate the Mars Hill Lions 15-6 in baseball action at Feinbloom Field on Sunday.
The Lions (1-3) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off Buccaneer starter
Alex Gonzalez. Jeff Mayo ripped a two-run double to right and came around to score on a single by Matt Carter.
Mars Hill added two more runs in the fifth inning, as Carter doubled in Mayo and Brandon Seger.
Meanwhile Lion freshman Calvin Teague was busy shutting the Bucs (4-1) down. Through five innings, he had allowed only five hits, no walks, no runs and had recorded five strikeouts.
But in the sixth inning the wheels came off for Teague.
Cesar Aranguren drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on
Ricky Sanchez's third homer of the season.
Brian Lima and
Jesse Naber both singled and after a fielder's choice by
Bobby Hartney,
Jonathan Fraginals plated two runs with a double to left-center.
Jerry Thornton followed with a single, moving pinch runner
Brett Rossi to third and both came around on a wild play that started with a wild pitch by reliever Brenden Blackwell and included an error by Mayo. After the dust had cleared, the Bucs led 6-5.
But in the seventh inning, the Lions tied the game on another RBI single by Carter after Seger had reached on a dropped fly ball.
In the eighth inning, Naber broke the tie with a leadoff homer and Aranguren blasted a three-run double and the Bucs tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth inning as the Lions were designated the home team as part of the 2005 Nike/OTS Challenge organized by Nova Southeastern University.
Glen Zavitz (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Gonzalez for the Bucs, tossing three innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout. Seth Graham (0-1) who gave up the home run to Naber, took the loss for the Lions. Teague ended the game with 5.2 innings, nine hits, five runs, all earned, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Bucs travel to Savannah, Ga., on Saturday, Feb. 12-13 for two games against Wingate and one against Armstrong Atlantic.
