Baseball Drops A Pair In Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped a split doubleheader losing 4-3 to Wingate and falling 5-2 to Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday at Pirate Field.

In the first game, the Bucs carried a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Bobby Hartney and Jerry Thornton hit back-to-back singles to start the frame and both came around on a ground ball by Alex Meneses, which Bulldog shortstop Jon Svanda threw away. Menese later scored on a wild pitch.

But the Bulldogs plated four runs for the comeback win. Pinch hitter Dustin Hurdle cleared the bases with a double through the left side and came around to score the winning run when Mike Davila hit Bryan Baylis with his first pitch.

The Bucs wasted a brilliant performance by starter Jayson Brown, who tossed 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out eight. Jon Adams (0-1) took the loss, allowing all four runs on three hits and two walks. Jimmy Bowman (1-0) picked up the win for Wingate by working a perfect ninth inning.

In the second game, the Pirates unloaded for three runs in the first inning, on a passed ball and a two-run homer by Brandon Nunez off Buccaneer starter Alex Gonzalez (0-1).

The Bucs nibbled back, scoring single runs in the fourth, on a Ricky Sanchez homer, and the seventh on an RBI double by Jerry Thornton to trim the lead to 3-2.

But the Pirates responded with single runs of their own in the seventh and eight and shutout the Bucs the rest of the way.

Jon Troop (2-0) got the win with five innings work, allowing one run on Sanchez's homer, along with three other hits and two walks, while recording four strikeouts. Matt Nalutka worked a perfect ninth for his first save. Gonzalez took the loss, going 7.1 innings and allowing 11 hits, leading to all five runs. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Bucs will conclude this road trip against Wingate at 10:00 am on Sunday, before heading home to face the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.
