SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Barry University softball team (4-3) closed out the St. Mary's College Classic earlier today with a 10-1 loss to the Midwestern State Indians (3-1) in five innings.
In the first inning, the Indians pounded out four hits and scored four runs to take the early lead. The Buccaneer tried to rally after
Delilah Stroup scored on
Kim Fujimoto's RBI single to right, but that was all Barry could manage crossing the dish.
Midwestern's Kortney Kemper added a grand slam in the third inning to extend the Indian lead to 8-1. However, a two-run fifth sealed the deal for Midwestern as the game was halted by NCAA rule after five innings. Elizabeth Bennett (3-2) suffered the loss for Barry giving up eight runs on seven hits and walked six in 2.2 innings.
Ramie Garcia (1-1) hurled the Bucs' final 2.1 innings giving up two unearned runs and allowed just two hits. Midwestern's Jenna Deweber (1-0) picked up her first win of the year going five innings and gave up three hits and one unearned run.
The Buccaneers will return to Buccaneer Field on Feb. 11 hosting top-ranked Florida Southern, which also opens Sunshine State Conference play for both teams.
