Softball Outlasts Top-Ranked Florida Southern

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Heather Hodges (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Barry University softball team (5-3, 1-0 SSC) a 5-4 Sunshine State Conference win over the top-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (4-1, 0-1 SSC) earlier tonight at Buccaneer Field.

Heading into the season, the Moccasins were preseason pick number one by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and had not allowed a run in four games prior to their meeting with the Buccaneers tonight. However, Florida Southern's win streak came to an abrupt end allowing five Buccaneer runs to cross the plate in the loss.

The Moccasins struck first in the top half of the third inning when Stephanie Huber (Sr., Vancouver, British Columbia) hit an RBI single to give Florida Southern a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Barry's Christina DeTagle (Fr., North Miami, Fla.) led off with a walk to ignite a four-run inning. Later in the same inning with the bases loaded, Amanda Moore (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) drew a free pass to the bases off Moccasin ace Megan Brown (So., Carrolton, Ga.) to tie the game 1-1. Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) followed with a two-RBI single to right field and Hodges drove in another run on an RBI single to give Barry a 4-1 lead after five.

In the top of the seventh, Huber cut into the Buccaneer lead with a two-RBI triple and then Florida Southern's Leah English (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) tripled to drive to tie the game at four apiece. Finally in the bottom half of the inning, Barry rookie Holli Davis (Fr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.) led off for the Buccaneers with an RBI to right, but a costly error by Florida Southern's right fielder and a wild pitch by Brown allowed Davis to move into scoring position with Hodges at the plate. With the count full, Hodges drove a single up the middle to give the Buccaneers a 5-4 win over the top-ranked Moccasins.

Hodges led the Buccaneers with two hits and added two RBI, while Keeney added two RBI of her own. Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) gave up four runs on six hits and struck out six to improve her record to 4-2. Brown (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season for Florida Southern giving up five runs (four earned) on seven Buccaneer hits and walked eight while striking out six.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 to close out the three-game conference series at Buccaneer Field at 1 pm.
