VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Barry University softball team (9-6) dropped both end of a split doubleheader earlier today to start the South Region Crossover tournament. The Buccaneers feel to the sixth-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers12-0 in five innings and suffered a six-inning 9-1 loss to the West Florida Argonauts in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Chargers (17-1) scored one in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. They later added five runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth while pounding out 12 hits in the 12-0 win. Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) fell to 6-4 on the year in the loss for Barry giving up five runs (four earned) and struck out two. Jenni Smithson (5-0) earned the win for Alabama-Huntsville striking out three and allowing just one hit.
The nightcap was a near repeat of the early game. The Argonauts (9-0) scored two runs to start the game in the first inning. However, this time around Barry's
Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a solo home run, her second of the year. But the Argonauts added four more runs in the third and three in the sixth for the 9-1 win.
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) suffered the loss for Barry giving up six runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings, while West Florida's Amber Browning (6-0) picked up the win for the Argonauts allowing just one earned run and struck out 12.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 for day two of the South Region Crossover beginning at 10 am against North Alabama followed by a 12 pm game with host Valdosta State and a 4 pm start with Delta State.
